  • Helps to perform various experimental procedures that include a working knowledge of skin biology, stem cell biology and molecular biology techniques. The experimental procedures include: in vivo models of regeneration that utilize in vivo bioluminescence, fluorescence and non-fluorescence imaging, human organotypic cell cultures, various other human and mouse cell cultures, isolation of mouse and human cells from peripheral blood, isolation of mouse and human cells from the skin, immunohistochemistry, immunoassays (ELISA, myeloperoxidase assays), molecular biology techniques such as isolation of RNA, RT-PCR, real-time PCR, gel electrophoresis, affinity column purification, FACS/Flow cytometry, intracellular staining, and protein analysis and quantification (e.g. Western blots)
  • Harvesting and collection of tissue specimens from the pathology suite. Preparation and isolation of lymphocytes from tissue samples and peripheral blood. Perform standard laboratory procedures such as maintaining cell cultures requiring the use of sterile technique, preparing slides using staining techniques, and performing assays for protein, RNA, DNA, or other cellular components. Caring for laboratory animals. Perform standardized experimental protocols. May prepare animals for surgery, and care for animals after surgery. Calibration of instruments, and preparation of laboratory equipment for use. Keeping records of the conduct and outcome of laboratory analyses. May enter data into a database
  • The research focus of the laboratory is on the assembly and morphogenesis of herpesviruses. Current projects involve use of biochemical and biophysical methods to analyze protein-protein interactions and structural features of the interactive domains. Using recombinant baculovirus technology to produce virus-like particles for structural studies and proteomic analysis. Creating recombinant viruses tagged with fluorescent reporters (GFP) to visualize in real-time virus particle movement within cells and in neurons. New projects also focus on development of protein microarrays using a virion display method for human transmembrane proteins. In addition, in conjunction with the Synthetic Biology team at JCVI we are proposing to assemble the large genomes of herpesviruses using synthetic genomics. Use molecular biology methods (cloning, PCR assays, and mutagenesis), cell culture methods (transfections, virus infections, cell line maintenance), biochemical procedures (protein electrophoresis, western blotting, immunoprecipitation, protein purification, protein microarray, immunofluorescence), recombinant herpesvirus and baculovirus generation. Maintains accurate and current data records. Organizes and records plasmid constructs and stocks made as part of project. Maintains record of freezer stocks as well. Duties may also include ordering supplies and general laboratory maintenance
  • Maintains detailed records of results which may include collecting, extracting and entering data; manipulating, interpreting and/or presenting results; preparing charts and graphs for presentations and publications. May perform scientific literature searches in support of research; complete portions of grant applications, manuscripts and publications
  • Majority of responsibilities will involve processing/assaying clinical samples as part of on-going clinical investigations. Significant contributions will be rewarded with co-authorship. A successful applicant will enjoy working as a team
